I have a good friend which had a marquise diamond ring set with one triangle diamond on each side of it. It was a narrow band and I had sold it to her probably 15 years ago. Her husband had decided to update the look and he wanted me to build a completely custom made set for her using her original 1.63ct marquise diamond as the center piece. She has long and slender fingers, so she can easily wear a three piece set. A three piece set consists usually of an engagement ring in the center framed in by two wedding bands, one on each side of it. This make for a wider look and can offer many fun things to do with it.
So, I had to come up with a good design for the new engagement ring. I design a lot of halo rings, so I wanted this ring to be a halo style ring. She is sensitive to rings that are too thick or have rough spots which might rub the middle and pinky fingers. So, the sides of the ring needed to be smooth with no prongs. I wanted diamonds in the band of the ring, so my design went into the direction of channel setting diamonds down the sides of the ring. The halo needed to be larger to compliment the 1.63ct marquise. The marquise diamond is a slender 2 to 1 length to width ratio which is nearly an ideal marquise shape. We have used smaller diamonds in halos for several years, but I have been experimenting with the idea of using larger diamonds in the halo. I am also doing more with the antique beads on the edges of the halo. So, I opted to use 2.5mm round diamonds in the halo and down the band of the ring. Ths gives me exactly 1.00 carat of round diamonds in this ring to compliment her 1.63ct marquise. I also wanted to use the European shank on the bottom of the ring so that it would be more balanced. So, the final design had all of these elements for the engagement ring plus I also wanted the wedding bands to fit up flush against it, so the halo had to be just the right height off of the finger for the eternity bands to go under it but not too high so as to keep the ring balanced.
I recommended that we do eternity diamond wedding bands to frame it in. Each eternity band has 1.08cttw of round diamond which match the diamonds in the engagement ring. The eternity banmds are also channel set and match the design of the band on the engagement ring.
The finished 3 piece set turned out exactly as designed. We will have more photographs of this set on our Facebook page sometime next week.
