This is a story of a super ring. A super ring is a ring that is designed and built to be impressive in looks and extremely complicated to design and build. This type of jewelry normally takes several months of planning, design, and locating the proper gemstones to complete. The client originally approached me in early spring of this year with an idea for a wonderful ring for his wife. She likes blue, and he wanted something that she could wear for special events and occasions. He had pictures of ideas that he liked, but he wanted something more original.
So, we began our quest to make a really high end ring that is also elegant, comfortable to wear, and complicated to build. The first order of business was picking the right gem for the center. We spent a few weeks going back and forth with different gem quality topaz stones from New York until we found the right one. It was the right size, well cut and had just the right shade of blue. Everything would be built around this gem and her finger.
Next, the design phase. We spent well over 40 hours on the design process. I went through four or five different designs before I had the exact look that I wanted. The process was mostly done using computer aided design. It was too complex for hand carving with the multiple redesigns that I did before the final design. The design has a row of round and oval topaz surrounding the center. These are set at a 15 degree angle sloping down from the center. Then, a halo of round diamonds are set aound the topaz stones, also at a 15 degree angle and 1/2mm lower than the topaz stones. Then, for that extra touch, I have 77 round diamonds set with shared prongs around the outer edge of the halo top.
On the sides, I wanted to split the band as it came up to the halo, but I did not want just a gap there. So, I filled that with a pear shaped blue topaz to add color to the sides. The band of the ring is a European shank which helps to balance the ring. The casting was done in platinum. Everything is high polished, and all of the diamonds are VS clarity and near colorless.
The pictures show you how the ring was made. The first picture is a top view of the finished ring. The next picture is the wax model that I made to see how everything fits and works. The next picture is the raw platinum ring casting before the topaz and diamonds were set. Then I have the final picture again showing the finished product.
